Greece and Turkey

In May 2007, we visited the island Samos in Greece. A very relaxing place. We stayed in Kokkari and had a nice view on the small harbour.

At the beach in Samos you may view the Turkish mainland. Apparently, it must be very difficult for Greece and Turkey to be in one EU: even their flags fly in opposite directions.

Nepal - Political Situation

In 2005, we have been in Nepal for a trekking (see below). April 2006: the political situation is worsening. Recent information can be found in the Nepali Times at http://www.nepalitimes.com/. You may login with user name nepal and password nieuws.

November 2006: the situation has been improved. As the Nepali Times stated: We have a deal. The Maoist will be a political movement. Hopefully, this situation will sustain.

Manaslu Trekking - Nepal

In October/November 2005, we made a very exciting trekking in Nepal. A photo impression can be found here (15 minutes slide show - 48 MB). Another slide show with Nepali people can be found here (8 minutes - 16 MB). Click on OK for the unregistered version of MySlideshow. You may stop the slide show with Escape.
Some data about our trip we made together with our friends Aafke and Leo (still another Gang of Four). The trekking around the Manaslu would take 19 days walking: from the lowest point in Ghorka at 500m to the highest point the Lakya pass at 5250 m and then down again. The trekking was arranged by HT Wandelreizen.
For our group of four, we had 2 Nepali guides, 2 cooks and a helper, and 18 porters to carry all luggage, fuel and food. After two third of the trekking – in the base camp just at 4550 m before the pass – we could not continue because there was too much snow. We had to go back and eventually needed two extra days. So we were walking 21 days usually from half past seven till around four with one and a half hour lunch break. Quite heavy but also very beautiful.
